It is a lesson that should not be forgotten, especially as Nigeria witnesses a new wave of sectarian violence that threatens to split Africa's most populous nation again.
Achebe’s new memoir, “There Was a Country,” was published in the United Kingdom on Thursday. It will hit the shelves in Nigeria any day now, and will be available in the United States on Oct. 11.

7 Honored by NOA for arresting Cynthia Osukogu's killers.
For the excellent job of arresting the killers of Cynthia Osukogu, who was killed in a Lagos hotel in June, seven Police officers who performed the feat, were yesterday awarded the ‘NOA Civic Recognition Award’ by the National Orientation Agency.
According to the Director General, NOA, Mr. Mike Omeri, the National Orientation Agency decided to initiate the civic recognition award because Nigerians in various walks of life and endeavour have been making the nation proud without been recognised and encouraged.
“The whole nation was gripped with anger, fear and rage when this ugly and unfortunate incident occurred. These patriotic officers stuck out their necks to unravel the mystery. What you did restored Nigeria’s police image before the whole world.
“You also restored some sort of succour to the family by arresting those that committed the dastardly act.”
The seven officers are ACP Damien Okoro, the Area Commander ‘Festac’, DSP Imoh Gregory, ASP Mariam Ogunmolasuyi, ASP Agbaje Yakubu, Inspector Edo Joseph, Sergeant Patience Biokoro and Sergeant Frank Okorobon, all of Area ‘E’ Festac, Lagos.
In his speech, the IG, Mohammed Abubakar commended the NOA for the honour done his men saying it has opened a new vista of partnership between the Police and the agency after which he elevated sergeants Frank Okorobon and Patience Biokoro, to the rank of Inspector with immediate effect and also directed Inspector, Edo Joseph, to proceed on a course preparatory to his promotion to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (SP).
He attributed the feat of arresting the killers to the policy of transformation sweeping across the police force, saying, “I assure you that we will continue to provide the right leadership and you will continue to see breakthroughs and successes in our efforts to rid the society of criminals.”

Female banker sends robbers after customer
From Daily Sun
A female cashier working in a new generation bank along New Market Road, Onitsha, Anambra State has landed in trouble for sending robbers after a customer just after he withdrew N5 million from the bank.
It was gathered that the customer was attacked by the armed bandits who operated on two motorcycles while waiting to board a vehicle to his destination.
After being dispossessed of the money, Daily Sun gathered that the victim became suspicious of the role played by the female cashier as no other person knew about the withdrawal and he hurried back to the bank in anger and threatened to expose the cashier if the stolen money was not returned immediately to him.
According to a reliable source, the bank manager, whose office was situated close to the banking hall, overheard their argument and invited them into his office.
While interviewing both parties, the female cashier consistently denied involvement in the crime and vowed to deal with the victim if his allegation was eventually proved to be false.
However, the cat was let out of the bag during hot exchange of words when the mobile phone of the cashier rang persistently and she refused to answer the call.
While she was fidgeting, the bank manager suspected foul play and ordered the cashier to answer her call, using the amplified speaker.
When she finally picked the call after much reluctance, it was the voice of the excited robber from the other end telling the cashier that the operation was successful.
He told the cashier to meet him at the designated location to collect her share after the close of work.
The cashier became speechless after the call as tears of shame and guilt streamed down her face.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state, Mr. Ralph Uzoigwe, said he had not received any complaint from the bank and promised to reach the reporter as soon as information got to him.
It was learnt that the bank was handling the incident internally to avoid a dent to its image.

Boko Haram,'You can't Islamise - OBJ
From The Tribune
FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Friday, told members of the Boko Haram and their sponsors that they were living in a fool’s paradise if they believed that they could win their current war against the Nigerian state. Obasanjo, who was responding to questions on News Day on the British Broadcasting Corporation [BBC] news programme monitored in Ibadan, particularly declared that they were naive to think that they could turn the into country to an Islamic state.
Describing such mission as an unattainable objective, he said they would soon realise that they were engaging in a futile exercise, in spite of claims that Boko Haram had vowed to fight to the finish.
“People, who know the history of Nigeria, will know that you cannot impose any religion on Nigeria as a whole. The people Boko Haram cannot impose Sharia in the North, where most of our people are Muslims, let alone in the entire country. “By now, they should know that. So, I see a bit of naivety in that objective that they have given to themselves. It is an unattainable objective and we need to win their heart and mind,” Obasanjo stated.
On the declaration that the Boko Haram men had promised to sustain their current hostility against the country until their primary objective was achieved, the former leader subtly dismissed the claim as he saw it as a tall order.
He declared, “Well, if you are prepared to kill more people, it is like somebody saying we will fight to the last drop of our blood. Now, one doesn’t know whose blood will be the last to drop. How many people will be killed? How many of them will survive at the end of the day? Boko Haram and those who believe in their cause will soon know that yes, it not a war that they can win.”
Nonetheless, Obasanjo listed what he termed internal and external factors that culminated in the birth of Boko Haram.
According to him, they included the failure of leadership in the country, inadequate education in the North and the country generally, coupled with inadequate employment opportunities.
